Climateware is a pioneering company in the climate technology industry, dedicated to creating innovative solutions to tackle the climate crisis. They design beyond technology-driven products to enable individuals and businesses to drive meaningful impact in decarbonization efforts. From corporate carbon management to logistics software for reducing emissions, Climateware develops scalable and practical solutions to empower climate action.
Customer Challenge
Climateware required a robust, scalable, and secure cloud infrastructure to support their innovative climate technology solutions. Their workloads demanded high availability, efficient resource allocation, and seamless integration of multiple AWS services. As their applications grew in complexity and scale, they faced challenges in managing compute resources, ensuring secure data handling, and monitoring their applications’ health effectively.
The lack of a streamlined deployment strategy also posed risks, including potential downtime and inefficiencies. Additionally, Climateware sought to minimize operational costs while maintaining a resilient infrastructure to support their applications’ varying demands.
Partner Solution
To address Climateware’s needs, we designed and implemented a modern infrastructure leveraging Amazon EKS (Elastic Kubernetes Service) as the backbone of their architecture. The solution integrated multiple AWS services to provide a secure, scalable, and cost-effective platform.
- Amazon EKS was deployed to orchestrate their containerized workloads, ensuring seamless scalability and management of their applications. This was achieved through Terraform-based automation, which streamlined the provisioning of Kubernetes clusters and associated resources across private subnets for enhanced security.
- CloudWatch was configured for centralized monitoring of cluster metrics, including CPU, memory, and pod utilization, as well as application logs for troubleshooting and operational insights.
- Secrets Manager and Key Management Service (KMS) were employed to securely store and manage sensitive application credentials and encryption keys.
- Elastic Load Balancing (ELB) was used to distribute traffic efficiently across application components, ensuring high availability and fault tolerance.
- Relational Database Service (RDS) and ElastiCache were integrated for data storage and caching, optimizing application performance and responsiveness.
- VPC (Virtual Private Cloud) provided a secure networking layer with private subnets for EKS nodes and NAT gateways for outbound traffic management.
- Cost Optimization: Spot instances were dynamically provisioned using Karpenter, ensuring cost-efficient scaling of the EKS clusters without compromising performance.
These components were tightly integrated into a Terraform-based infrastructure-as-code (IaC) framework, ensuring consistent, repeatable, and scalable deployments.
Results and Benefits
The solution delivered significant benefits for Climateware, aligning with their mission of enabling scalable and practical climate solutions:
- Improved Scalability and Resilience: Amazon EKS provided the flexibility to scale workloads dynamically, ensuring seamless operations during traffic spikes and growing user demands.
- Enhanced Security: With services like Secrets Manager, KMS, and private VPC subnets, the infrastructure ensured secure handling of sensitive data and application credentials.
- Operational Efficiency: CloudWatch dashboards enabled real-time monitoring of workload health, helping identify and resolve issues proactively, reducing downtime.
- Cost Savings: The use of Spot instances and efficient resource allocation reduced overall infrastructure costs, saving Climateware significant operational expenses.
- Automation and Standardization: Terraform-based IaC ensured consistent deployments and reduced manual errors, enhancing overall development and deployment efficiency.
